I'm going to introduce you to the secret of accumulating free travel. I promised you this guide
wasn't full of fluff. I want to get right to the point and teach you how to generate large amounts of award miles that
you can redeem for free travel.
You don't have to be a frequent flyer to accumulate frequent flyer points. The fact is, one of the best ways to get points IS NOT BY FLYING!
Award miles are points earned that accumulate in frequent flyer accounts. There are a variety of
ways to accumulate these points, which I will describe later. First, let me give you a little history lesson, it'll
help you understand the formula better.
In an effort to create customer loyalty, American Airlines introduced in 1981 an entirely new
program, commonly called, a frequent flyer program. In essence, it rewarded passengers who enrolled in the program
points for miles flown on American. The points could be redeemed for free travel or upgrades.
In the early '80's, I wasn't flying so I am not real sure what the exact rewards were. It really doesn't matter,
whats important is what those points can do for you now.
Recent survey revealed nearly 50% of frequent flyers
weren't subscribed to any frequent flyer program!
In a recent survey, I discovered nearly 50% of the flyers I polled did not belong to a single
frequent flyer program. I couldn't believe it. So I asked my agents who work in my travel office if this number was
consistent with people who purchase discount airline tickets from us.
(Remember me telling you I own a travel agency?)
And to my continued amazement, it was. All my agents told me that about half of our clients would
respond in the negative when asked if they participated in a frequent flyer program.

Right now, you may be thinking, "David, I don't fly often enough to mess with it, I'm not a
frequent flyer." That, my friend, is wrong thinking. The frequent flyer programs have evolved into a HUGE
marketing program for the airlines. I read recently that for one US airline, it was the most profitable portion of
their business.
Frequent flyer programs are here to stay and YOU need to learn how take advantage of them.
Every major airline on the planet has a frequent flyer program. Oh, they may call it by another
name, but the essence is this: "fly on our jets and we'll give you points to redeem for something in the future."
Its called, "adding incentive." Like I said, this has evolved into a huge program. Frequent flyer
points are given as an incentive for a host of things: mortgages, investing, purchases, etc. By adding the
incentive of points that eventually become free travel, these institutions entice you to buy their product or
service.
And now, with airlines forming partnerships with other airlines and merging their frequent flyer
programs, the possibilities increase dramatically. This becomes a great opportunity for you.
For instance, a couple summers ago, I took my wife to Eastern Europe for two weeks. We flew on Air
France, but
since Air France and Delta are partner airlines, I dumped the 12,000 points into my Delta account, rather than in
an Air France account.
Here is the wisdom in that. I fly Delta regularly and already have a very healthy Delta account.
I'd never flown Air France before and not intending to in the future, I just had a chance to pick up some really
cheap tickets for summer travel.
I knew the points accumulated could be added to my Delta account, rather than starting a new Air
France account. See what I mean? Flew one airline and the points went into another account, all because of a
partnership between the two airlines.
Listen to this. I've accumulated enough frequent flyer points with Northwest Airlines for a free
ticket and not once set foot on one of their planes. How did I do it? By using the various methods described in the
next chapter.
Now you can redeem frequent flyer points for almost anything; gifts, vacations, airline tickets,
magazine subscriptions. The list is almost endless. But I believe, and what this guide is about, that redeeming
points for free travel is the GREATEST VALUE of all frequent flyer points. That
may be the reason why all these other gifts and options have been added, to distract you from the greater value.
Let me repeat that again, its so profound, yet simple, that its easy to miss it.
